The confrontation between Govend and her father
A summary of the scene:
The scene is set at the beginning of the film in Govend’s house. It is the first scene where we see Govend. Therer are Govend, her parents and her ten brothers. Govend’s father wants to marry her to a man but she doesn’t want to. She wants to go back to Qamarian to keep teaching.
The tone of the scene:
It’s a powerful scene for Govend because she dares to confront her father. She is audacious and bold because she knows how to handle her father to make him agree with her.
What I find striking in the scene:
We can feel a lot of pressure in the scene because all her brothers are looking at her while she speaks with her father. Govend’s mother is behind her husband and she doesn’t say anything about the future of her daughter. She has nothing to say because she’s a woman. She is in a weak position.
Our general opinion on the scene and the film:
It’s a very interesting film with an intriguing plot. It’s very strong emotionnally. We think that it is a movie which deserves to be seen.

My Favourite scene : The Hanging
A summary of the scene :
The scene takes place in a playground at the begining of the film. The kurds wanted to create a new state after the fall of Saddam Hussein. In this scene there is a priest, a judge, a doctor and the policeman. They are watching the criminal who is being hung, because he stole and killed .
The tone of the scene :
The scene is supposed to be a dramatic scene because the is an execution but it was funny because the hanging failed so it made us laugh.
What I find striking in this scene :
The fact that the hanging takes place in a playground, on a basket hoop is very striking because in a playground, kids used to play a lot of different games and have fun so if they knew that a man had been hung in their playground, they would probably be shocked !
My favorite character :
My favorite character is the prison warden because he is quite stupid, and the hanging didn’t succeed so he didn’t kill the criminal. This scene was supposed to be hard to watch however this character is making the atmosphere better.
Our general opinion on the scene and the film :
We liked this scene because it was funny to see the contrast between the sadness of the hanging and the humour of the prison warden during the hanging.

Our general opinion on the scene and the film
Finally, we think it is one of the most important scenes in the film because it is an unusual and intimate scene between Govend and Baran. And we understand there is a connection between them. This is the moment when the two characters fall in love, it is implicit.
The humorous hanging
A summary of the scene : The scene takes place in the capital of Kurdistan, Erbil. It’s in the playground of a school. A man is going to be sentenced to death. There is Baran, the religious man, the doctor, the judge and the executioner. This scene happened after april 2003 but we don’t know exactly when. The executioner hasn’t prepared anything and he ends up using a ballot box because he doesn’t have anything else.
The tone of the scene : It is a mix between a dramatic scene and a humorous scene. It’s dark humour which makes the viewers reflect.
What I find stricking in the scene : What I find striking in the scene is when Baran, the religious man, the doctor, the judge, the executioner and the representative talk about what they want to do with the convicted as he is lying on the ground next to them.
My favourite character. Why ? The hangman is my favorite character because thanks to him the scene which is supposed to be dramatic is humorous. His « stupidity » makes him funny.
Our general opinion on the scene and the film : We like this film and the scene because the film director used humor to send a message and we learn about the history of Kurdistan.

The Heart’s Music
The scene takes place in Kurdistan in the city of Qamarian. It is about Govend playing music with Baran around, twice in the movie. The first time in the mountain in the afternoon, Baran is away and he is looking at her whereas the second time he is next to her while she is playing music with a hang at school at night
The tone of the scene :
It is a romantic scene and it is heartwarming. There are a lot of emotions because the music helps Govend express her feelings.
What I find striking in the scene :
We find it striking because no matter how close or far away they are, there is always a connection between them. We can see they are very intimate and there are very strong feelings between them.
Favorite character :
Govend is our favorite character because she is a strong and independant woman. At the same time she is very sensitive ans beautiful.
General opinion :
It is a very intriguing plot because in the romantic story they highlight political questions such as women’s rights, new rules ….

My favourite scene : Govend versus her brothers
Names of the students: Eliza, Nicolas, Noémie, Léonie
A summary of the scene:
The scene takes place in the mountains in the evening. It’s raining. Govend’s brothers don’t agree with the fact that she’s a teacher and she isn’t married but she’s dating Baran. Her big brother in particular is very angry. He says that she’s their honor. He’s violent and threatens to kill her: he points a gun at her but the others stop him.
The tone of the scene:
It’s a dramatic, suspenseful and violent scene. We have empathy for Govend because it’s injust: They shouldn’t decide for her.
What I find striking in the scene:
We found the sexism and the violence of the big brother most striking in this scene: Govend isn’t free. She cannot go against the cultural norm of the family matter. She’s fighting for her rights as a woman.
My favourite characteer :
Our favourite character is Govend because she’s the ideal representation of a strong woman who can fight for herself. She’s brave and strong: she decides that she will not obey her brothers.
Our general opinion on the scene and the film :
Our general opinion of the scene is that it is a very sexist scene. We think the film is powerful because there are many emotions and it’s talking about important questions of society such as the place of the woman in the society or political questions(death penalty). This film has been made to show us what happened in Kurdistan. It makes us think about the inequalities in the world.

The tone of the scene :
It is a violent scene, we were surprised !
There are a lot of strong emotions.
What I find stiking in the scene :
The violence of this scene, and the rapidity of the crime. The women killed all their ennemies one by one and they didn’t miss any of them. My favourite character. Why ?
